Why Character References Matter

Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out. - Proverbs 10:9

Mentorship is about more than just skills—it’s about character, growth, and potential. As a mentor, getting to know your mentee isn’t just about what they tell you; it’s also about what others see in them. That’s where character references come in.

A 360° View of Your Mentee

Conducting character references isn’t about digging up dirt or being overly critical—it’s about getting a well-rounded perspective. Different people see different sides of your mentee, and their insights can help you:

Understand their strengths – Maybe they’re a natural leader, a great problem-solver, or have an unmatched work ethic.
Recognize potential challenges – Perhaps they struggle with time management or need help with communication.
See how they interact with others – Peers, teachers, supervisors, or colleagues can reveal qualities that don’t always show up in a one-on-one setting.

Avoiding Blind Spots

Without outside perspectives, you might miss important details that could affect your mentorship approach. A mentee may genuinely want to improve, but if they’re unaware of certain habits or challenges, how can they grow? A character reference helps bring those to light in a constructive way.

Strengths & Concerns—A Balanced Approach

The goal of a reference check isn’t to judge but to gather useful insights. By acknowledging both the positives and areas of concern, you can:

🔹 Celebrate strengths and encourage more of what’s working
🔹 Identify areas where mentorship can have the biggest impact
🔹 Ensure the mentee is a good fit for the program or relationship

The Bottom Line: It’s All About Growth

Mentorship works best when both mentor and mentee are aware, prepared, and aligned. By taking the time to hear from others, you’re not just learning about your mentee—you’re setting them up for success in the most informed and impactful way.

PRO TIP: Not sure how to conduct a character reference check? Try utilizing the Applicant Character Reference Questionaire (adapted from the BSMMFC Lake Washington Chapter).

📌 So before you dive in, take a step back. What can others tell you about your mentee that will help them thrive?
